About Havisham Corners
Welcome to Havisham Corners, a small New England hamlet nestled along the northern Atlantic coast. As with most small towns in the area, charm meets history in Havisham Corners. Just a stone’s throw from Plymouth Rock and many storied battlegrounds of the Revolutionary War, Havisham Corners is filled with tales of brave soldiers, self-sacrificing patriots, courageous settlers and industrious laborers. At first glance, it is a typical, American town.
Despite the size of the town (only about 2500 residents call Havisham Corners home), industry thrives. The bustling fishing wharves employ the second largest portion of the population. An early morning trip to said wharves showcases the hard-working fishermen heading out to sea in search of the choicest crab, lobster and fish the Northern Atlantic has to offer.
The largest segment of the population is employed by the tourism industry. Many local entrepreneurs have set up shop, selling the town’s wares from days gone by as well as homespun arts and crafts. Along many of the town’s country lanes and main thoroughfares, stands, some makeshift and some rather elaborate, line the streets, selling homemade jams, jellies, pies and fresh maple syrup.
Hundreds of thousands of people yearly make the trip in and around Havisham Corners to get a slice of life the way it used to be. The town square has changed very little in the last three hundred years, the storefronts and buildings all reminiscent of a very exciting and dynamic time in our country’s youth. At the center of the town is the Corners Presbyterian Church, the cornerstone of the quaint town. Many a town meeting has been held on these very steps. The grand old church stands on the edge of the town cemetery which to this day houses the remains of some of the town’s earliest residents. Around the outskirts of the town, farms dot the very picturesque, pastoral countryside with centuries old homes scattered amongst the rural backdrop.
So, during your visit to New England, a day trip to Havisham Corners is a must. Drop by the “Maple Syrple” stand on the corner of Peach Street and Apple Street or visit Mrs. Fields in her locally acclaimed “Love Muffins Bakery” on Main street for a delicious rhubarb pie. Go antiquing at “Trunk O’ Junk” or “Pandora’s Box” or simply amble about town, making sure to visit the must-see sights of Corners Presbyterian Church, the Town Hall, and the Government Building. Wherever you end up in Havisham Corners, however, be sure to finish your tour by sundown.
Strange things happen in Havisham Corners after sundown. Ghost stories and stories of the preternatural and supernatural abound. The storied history of the town and its inhabitants is said to lend itself to this type of phenomenon. While the townsfolk have learned to cope and even persevere with this issue over the last few centuries, few outsiders fair well. The few visitors who have not heeded the warning to leave before nightfall have not lived to tell the tales. Anything that could go bump in the night does in this haven for the eerie.
